What Is Heart Disease?

Heart disease is a condition that affects the heart and the blood vessels supplying it. The heart is a muscle that pumps blood to all parts of the body. The coronary arteries are a set of blood vessels that supply oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle. Coronary artery disease (CAD) occurs when these arteries become narrowed or blocked, often because of cholesterol deposits called plaques, which build up along their walls.

The narrowing reduces or blocks the flow of oxygen-rich blood to your heart muscle and can eventually lead to death of your heart muscle cells if untreated. Because symptoms vary from person to person, CAD often goes undiagnosed until it has progressed significantly.
